The Best Sunny-Day Adventures in Seattle

In a place known for its rain, it might be shocking to think that Seattle is a top destination for outdoor adventures. However, there’s something rather special about the sunny days here, from the way the light bounces off the lakes, the burst of colors at Pike Place Market, or the lively atmosphere of Capitol Hill. If you’re planning a day in the Emerald City, here’s a complete guide of how to soak up every minute of good weather.
The Classic Parks
Calling all sunshine lovers! Here are some of the best parks you can explore in all of Seattle:
Volunteer Park
Just a short walk from our property, Shafer Baillie Mansion, is Volunteer Park, a great pick for a warm afternoon. The greens are perfect for picnics, reading under a shaded tree, or watching the local pick-up games. Make sure you don’t miss climbing the historic Water Tower, a beautiful building with a spiraling staircase leading to the top. The observation deck provides some of the most magical views of Washington State, and is sure to leave an impression on the rest of your adventures.
Discovery Park
Did you know that Discovery Park is the biggest park in Seattle? Despite that, once you enter the park, it’ll feel as if you’ve left all the city’s buzz behind. Trails wind through gorgeous meadows, forests, and even down to a stretch of beach. It’s a perfect place to wander around and ‘discover’ your favorite lookout spot.
Gas Works Park
A former gasification plant, Gas Works Park is now an astounding park showing views of the Seattle skyline across Lake Union. If you love kite-flying, the open space here is great for launching your kite into the sky.
Adventures for Everyone
- Kayaking: Rent a kayak or paddleboard and explore Lake Union or Portage Bay. Unplug from the hustle and bustle as you glide by floating homes. If you’re lucky, you might just see a seaplane or two take off.
- Burke-Gilman Trail: Cyclists, runners, and those looking for a scenic walk will all thoroughly enjoy the Burke-Gillman trail. Starting right around Gas Works Park, you can journey through neighborhoods, past local breweries and bakeries, ending up all the way over at the University of Washington.
- Pickleball: Seattle is crazy about pickleball, and there are a ton of courts throughout the city. It’s perfect for playing in the sun, while jamming out to the music drifting up from the streets below.
Family-Friendly Attractions
Seattle is one of the best places in the United States to travel with kids. Woodland Park Zoo is a favorite among the locals, where kids can roam through the African Savanna or penguin habitat. It’s one of the most unique things to do in Seattle, with tons of special and rare animals within the walls. Plus, they have food carts throughout, perfect for quick bites for your children.
The
Seattle Center Artists at Play Playground is another go-to location, with giant climbing towers, slides, and music-making items. Parents can relax on nearby benches while their kids get their wiggles out.
Dining: Best Patios and Views
When you’re ready for dinner, you need to take full advantage of the weather and find some dining with incredible views and patios. Luckily for you, we have some recommendations:
- Westward: This is one of the top picks for seafood, salads, and cocktails. Their outdoor seating comes with Adirondack chairs, fire pits, and unbeatable views of the lake.
- Terra Plata: Mediterranean-inspired dishes plus a rooftop patio, does it get any better?
- Ray’s Cafe: Watch sailboats drift by while sampling tasty seafood dishes, such as wild salmon or fish and chips.
Rain or Shine: Some Indoor Favorites
Even on a sunny day, it’s good to have a backup plan in case it rains. The Seattle Art Museum and the Chihuly Garden and Glass are great indoor places to visit.
Make the Most of Your Stay: Shafer Baillie Mansion
With so much to explore, and so little time to do it, it’s essential to stay in a place that you can call home at the end of the day. Shafer Baillie Mansion, located on Capitol Hill, is a beautiful stay, offering eight guest rooms and suites. Each room comes with a private bath, along with spacious day rooms on the main floor.
