Situated on a large hill overlooking the city, Capitol Hill is located just east of downtown Seattle. It's also home to Volunteer Park, Seattle University, and many independent shops and cafes.

Where did the name “Capitol Hill” come from?

Like many names, there are multiple theories to explain how the official name came to be. Some accounts suggest that real estate developer James A. Moore named it in an attempt to persuade Washington state leaders to relocate the capital from Olympia to Seattle-which ultimately failed.

Others believe the name was inspired by Capitol Hill in Denver, Colorado, where Moore had previously lived with his wife who was born there. Regardless of its origins, the name has endured and become synonymous with the neighborhood’s intriguing identity.

Early History and Development

The area of Capitol Hill has a long and diverse history that reflects the growth and evolution of the city itself. Before Europeans settled in the area, the land that would become Capitol Hill was home to the Duwamish people, who lived along the shores of nearby lakes and waterways. Are you looking for an interesting, beautiful, and COVID-safe Seattle experience? I’d like to suggest a delightful one-mile walk from the Shafer Baillie Mansion through Volunteer Park to the Lake View Cemetery.

First of all, the views from there are fabulous. You can see the Cascades, as well as the Olympic Mountains, Lake Washington, and the University of Washington from the upper central area of the cemetery. The trees and shrubs have been very well maintained.

Captain Louise Germain DeForest (1838–1870), a Civil War soldier, was the first person to be buried at Lake View Cemetery. At only 31 years of age, Captain DeForest preceded 895 Civil War soldiers who would eventually be buried at Lake View.

Famous Seattleites are interred at Lake View Cemetery, such as Princess Angeline, daughter of the city’s namesake, Chief Stealth. Also buried at Lake View are martial arts film star Bruce Lee and his son, Brandon Lee. Recent improvements to the path to the Lee’s grave site include a newly placed stone bench and wall, as well as a paved ramp with rail to assist access. People visit daily and many bring flowers, stones, and candles to the site. It is maintained by a friendly elderly man that was a friend to Bruce Lee. He continues to collect the money and tidy the site daily.

Walking through the gentle winding street through the cemetery can be such a meditative experience. It is quiet and beautiful, though located in the middle of a bustling city.

Chateau St. Michelle , the oldest winery in the state, is accepting guests to their acclaimed tasting room by advanced reservations only. When you call ahead and reserve your time, you’ll be met with a personalized experience unlike any other. Patterson Cellars is offering private tours and tastings in small groups or a wine & cheese pairing experience to go. You can also pick up bottles with curbside service and enjoy your own tasting experience at the inn!

Stay at Shafer Baillie Mansion

When looking for a place to stay in Seattle, look no further than Shafer Baillie Mansion Bed & Breakfast on Capitol Hill. This historic 14,000 square foot home allows you to spread out and unwind. Before you arrive, your innkeepers are busy making sure that your rooms are perfectly disinfected and ready for your stay. As has been our practice, we use disposable gloves when cleaning rooms. We are now wearing masks as well. We have triple guards on our bedding–bedbug protectors, mattress protectors, and then sheets (and similarly for our pillows) to ensure maximum cleanliness. We plan to schedule rooms to remain open at least one full day between guests in order to spend extra time cleaning and to limit the number of rooms available for reservations this summer, which will allow for more social distancing.

When you arrive, we will send you the numerical code to our front door and the directions to your room via email for self-check-in. You’ll find hand sanitizing stations in the entry hall table and frequently disinfected common areas. For your safety and ours, we will be offering daily housekeeping only upon request and will be coordinating with you to exchange towels, remove trash, and restock supplies as needed. During your stay, we continue to clean common areas like our warm and bright sunroom, cozy library, and dining room. Our breakfasts, while still delicious and energizing as usual, have changed a bit. Instead of a larger seating all in the dining room, we encourage you to enjoy our breakfasts in different common areas around our inn. It’s easy to spread out and find somewhere secluded in our mansion.

Stay safe, healthy, and relaxed during your trip to Seattle. Enjoy all of your favorite restaurants, views, and parts of town while socially distancing. There is a mask mandate in the state of Washington requiring all people to wear face-coverings when in public and maintaining a 6-foot buffer is recommended to ensure everyone’s safety.

On the 1 ^st day of fall I spent the day on Bainbridge Island. It was a beautiful day, warm and full of light. I decided to drive and took the ferry over. I started my afternoon at the Bloedel Reserve- a beautiful 150 acre property where walking slowly and soaking in the beauty of the surroundings is encouraged. There are wheelchair paths as well. The view of the Bloedel residence makes one think of Elizabeth Bennet’s description of Mr Darcy’s palatial abode- “ I’ve never seen a house so happily situated”.

Having worked up an appetite after my 2 hour stroll, I was ready for some food! I decided on the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art Bistro since I was planning to spend some time there as well. They have freshly-made soups and savory tarts as well as sandwiches, so I had a cup of tomato soup and a savory mushroom tart!

BIMA– a jewel of a museum– has a great variety of art installations, many of them by local artists. It is open year-round and is FREE! Of course donations accepted. https://www.biartmuseum.org/

After the museum, I had about 2 hrs to walk around town. Be aware that most shops close early– around 6pm, except for the bookstore which closes at 7pm.

Bainbridge has a great selection of shops, high-end boutiques, specialty shops such as Churchmouse Yarns and Tea, and the Calico Toy Shoppe. The bookstore was very welcoming and spacious with a great selection of books. While I was there they were getting ready for an author’s reading on the weekend.

Time to head back to Seattle– got in the ferry line just as they were boarding so no wait this time. It was a lovely evening so lots of people were taking photos of the beautiful Seattle skyline as we got closer to shore. All in all, a perfect day!

The Best Bike Routes Around Seattle’s Capitol Hill

Seattle is one of the most cyclist-friendly cities in America and it is so easy to explore by bike. You can bring your own to ride around, rent one from a local bike shop, or find one of the bike shares to get around town. Here are some of the best sight-seeing bike routes from Shafer Baillie Mansion , our Capitol Hill inn.

Washington Park Arboretum & East Montlake Park – 6.5 miles

It is surprising how quickly you can immerse yourself in nature while still being in the heart of Seattle. This loop takes you through the Washington Park Arboretum, over Foster and Marsh Islands, to East Montlake Park, and back to Shafer Baillie B&B. Ride along Aloha Street until you reach the southern tip of the Arboretum. From here you have a dozen options and trails meandering through the park. Follow the Foster Point Trail to the Arboretum Waterfront Trail. You’ll have a front-row view of Union Bay and the University of Washington. Arrive at East Montlake Park to have a picnic or simply enjoy the views before the climb back to Capitol Hill.

Madison Park, Madrona, & Cal Anderson Park – 8.2 miles

Head northeast to the shores of Lake Washington. Madison Park Beach is a hotspot for locals on any hot summer day. Take off your shoes and dip your toes in the water or bring a blanket and soak up the sun before heading south on McGilvra Boulevard. Along the boulevard are half a dozen beaches if you want a more secluded area for a picnic. Make a detour to the Madrona neighborhood on 34th Avenue. Grab a beer at Bottlehouse or stop by Molly Moon’s for a scoop of ice cream before taking the surface roads to Cal Anderson Park. Explore the reflection pools and water features in the park before heading down the road to the inn.

Volunteer Park Loop – 2-4 miles

Shafer Baillie Bed & Breakfast is lucky to be right next to Volunteer Park. You can take your bikes and peddle around the park to look at the stunning and unique mansions or snake through the trails to explore the park. Find the observatory and climb to the top for unparalleled views, check out the conservatory with a Victorian glass greenhouse, and see Bruce and Brandon Lee’s gravesites. Make your trip as long or short as you would like.

Lake Union Loop with Gas Works Park and Fremont – 9.2 miles

If you want a longer bike ride with lake views, funky parks, and chocolate, then we’ve got the loop for you. Head north towards the University of Washington. You can explore the pedestrian & cyclist only campus or follow the Burke-Gilman Trail to Gas Works Park. This legendary park is home to remnants of an old oil mill and gives you a great view of Seattle.

Continue over to Fremont where you can explore this funky, colorful town and take a tour of Theo Chocolate complete with samples of their mouthwatering sweets. Cross over the Fremont Bridge (home of the Fremont Troll ) and follow the Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop to Lake Union Park. Check out The Center for Wooden Boats or the Museum of History & Industry before crossing over I-5 on the way back to Capitol Hill.

Queen Anne Loop with Kerry Park and Belltown – 11.7 miles

Circling the Queen Anne neighborhood is a great blend of short uphills, casual downhills, and long steady waterfront stretches. Drop down to Lake Union Park and follow the Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop trail along the Fremont Cut. There are lots of mini-parks, boat docks, and resting places to get out and wander around. If you want a challenge, climb up and over Queen Anne Hill and through the shopping district on Queen Anne Avenue. If you want a more casual ride, you can circle around the hill. Either way, you’ll find yourself at Kerry Park, an iconic attraction with one of the best views of the Space Needle in town. Parking is almost impossible at this park, so riding a bike is the perfect way to visit without the hassle. From here you’ll drop down to Lower Queen Anne near the Seattle Center before climbing back uphill to Shafer Baillie B&B.

On top of these great sight-seeing loops, Seattle has reserved some streets around town as Stay Healthy Streets which have been closed off to cars. Walk or bike these new public spaces with ease.

You really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, but if you’re looking for our recommendation, we love the green papaya salad and crispy vegetarian rolls! Other hits on the menu include salt and pepper chicken wings, grilled prawn vermicelli, turmeric pork tenderloin, and lemongrass tofu.

Whether it’s their pad thai, wonton soup, pineapple fried rice, duck curry, or any of the other dishes on their fabulous menu, we always find ourselves deeply nourished and satisfied after ordering take-out at Rom Mai.

Our recommendations for the meat lover would be the barbacoa tacos, pork carnitas burrito, or chicken enchilada verde. For the vegetarians, we say go for their kale mushroom tacos or cheese enchiladas.

Vios is an amazing spot in town for made-from-scratch Greek food for lunch or dinner. The Venue

The Tudor Revival 14,000 square foot mansion is a beautiful space that finds the perfect balance of luxury and comfort – an ideal place to have your ceremony. First and foremost, we hope you are staying well and navigating this incredibly difficult time in our world successfully!

As a small bed and breakfast that prides itself on excellent service, we are adjusting to the circumstances that all of us are facing at this unprecedented time and want you to know how important you are to us.

We believe the service we provide is important to you and we are committed to serving you in a safe and responsible manner. We have put plans in place to help us provide the safest and best service possible during this challenging time.

We remain open and committed to the same mission, with some modifications to our service.

We practice social distancing, so please know that we will do our best to maintain a 6 foot distance from our guests. At 14,000 sq ft the Mansion has many spaces for guests to spread out!

For guests unable to keep current reservations: If you are able to change your reservation to a later date, or take a gift certificate instead of a refund, we would be most grateful. No fees will be charged for changing dates or converting to a gift certificate with at least 7 days’ notice.

Seattle to Vancouver Island on the Victoria Clipper!

The historic Victoria Clipper began its service on July 1, 1986, and with the addition of the Victoria Clipper V, have since carried passengers from Pier 69 to Vancouver Island in vintage style. As the Clipper sails down the Strait of Juan De Fuca, keep your eyes and cameras ready for the beautiful marine life visible from the ship! A little under three hours later, and the sunny coasts of Vancouver Island are the gateways to good times.

Bumbershoot Music & Arts Festival in Seattle!

It’s here! The 48th Annual Bumbershoot Music & Arts Festival is in Seattle from 8/30 to 9/1! Come celebrate all things musical and creative with an amazing lineup of bands and live entertainment, as well as art exhibits and booths, and food vendors.

Put on by both One Reel, a non-profit arts organization that strives for art in the community, and by AEG Presents, an entertainment office that produce headlining events, Bumbershoot should be nothing short of spectacular! Beginning in 1971, the first Bumbershoot was called “Festival 71”, and was put on by Seattle’s mayor Wes Uhlman. It then grew into the extravaganza it is now, getting renamed to “Bumbershoot” (an old colloquial term for “umbrella”) along the way.

Seattle’s 70th Celebration of Seafair!

Truly a harbinger of summer in Seattle, the Seafair is back again for it’s 70th year, a magnificent ten weeks of family fun and showing off all Seattle has to offer! Hosted by The Seafair Foundation, the festival spans all the way back to 1950 when business leaders designed Seafair as an event that would establish Seattle as the “boating capital of the world”. While Seattle has gained quite a bit more popularity over the years, the Seafair Foundation continues to put on Seafair to celebrate the diversity of our wonderful community; as well as to provide education opportunities, scholarships, and community engagement with regional programs.

While we can’t possibly list every event happening in the ten weeks that Seafair is running, here are some events worth planning for:

Entering its 90th year, the Burien Parade is one of the longest running parades in the nation! Join thousands of other spectators as amazing floats, marching bands, and the Seafair pirates, make their way down the parade route in celebration of our nation.

If one 4th of July celebration isn’t enough, there’s always more to do at Seafair. The Summer Fourth will be held in Gas Works Park and Lake Union Park- both less than 20 minutes away from Shafer Baillie Mansion! Visitors can expect live music, food vendors and a variety of entertainment such as pie eating contests and sack races, before the main fireworks event- USA Today voted this celebration as one of the best fireworks shows in the nation, choreographed to a Seafair-created musical score.

Arg, matey! Considered a signature event, the Seafair pirates will be sailing in to storm Alki Beach. This family friendly event features food and exhibit booths, as well as rides for the kiddos and contests like the “Pirate Look-Alike Contest”.

If you have ever wanted to try your skills at building a raft that could win you the gold, then this is the event for you! This event challenges kids, adults, schools, families, and businesses to build a watercraft that can take them across Green Lake- but the catch is that they must be made exclusively from milk cartons. Come see who will float and who will sink in this historic race to the end!

Seeking to honor and celebrate the lives of our loved ones that have passed, the Bon Odori is a historic Japanese Buddhist tradition that has made its way to Seattle. Visitors can expect traditional Japanese food, drinks, and cultural displays, while remembering the happiness given to us by those that came before.

If nothing else, this is the one to look forward to! With the most action and best sights, the Weekend Festival features events like stunt-biking, the Boeing Air Show flown by the historic Blue Angels, and the Seafair Cup, making this a thrill-seeker’s ultimate weekend.

Seattle Art Museum Exhibit Explores Nature and Self

As the weather grows warmer in Seattle, many find creative types find themselves looking to get back into the culture of their surroundings after being shut away for the winter. Leaning into the vibrancy of nature, as flowers and trees burst into life, we love to appreciate all things natural.

The Seattle Art Museum must have had the same idea, as their newest exhibit, “ Victorian Radicals : From the Pre – Raphaelites to the Arts & Crafts Movement ” explores the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the lasting impact it had on art as we see it today.

Beginning June 13th, this vibrant and detailed exhibit features avant-garde works that Victorian art critics called “perverse” and “revolting”- modern audiences are less likely to be quite so offended. But why such a strong reaction from the critics of the time?

Founded in 1848, the Pre-Raphaelites were a group of poets, painters, and other artists that felt confined by the artistic expectations of their time. In a society that they considered cheap and mass produced, they strove for meaningful ideas based on self reflection, and art created with nature at its source. This ideology continued to gain traction- despite the initial outrage- and has transformed into the arts and crafts movement, celebrating what we can imagine and create from within ourselves.

The 2019 Northwest Flower and Garden Show Plants Down in Seattle this Coming February!

Everyone enjoys the sweet scent of a lovely bouquet of flowers no matter the time of year. Lush pink peonies, vibrant yellow sunflowers, or fragrant lilacs can bring much joy and light to any environment. Here in Seattle, Washington we take our flowers and gardening quite seriously and have annually hosted the second largest Flower and Garden Show in the United States since 1989! This ‘perennial’ show is back for another round this year from February 20-24, so make sure to book a stay now with us at Shafer Baillie Mansion and join us for this cheerful flower festival! In the meantime, what can you expect to find and/or do during this show?

Gardens –
As expected of a Flower and Garden Show, the Gardens showcased during this five-day event will be utterly spectacular! The theme of this year’s festival is “Gardens of the World” and will be showcasing gardens covering designs from the Andes Mountains to Japanese landscaping! During the show there will also be a special Treasure Hunt competition just for kids where garden artists place hidden objects within their display and children hunt for them for prizes, so there is something here for all ages!

The always favorite Floral Competition will display extravagant arrangements of blooms in the Atrium Lobby when you first arrive, giving you a glimpse of what the show has to offer. There will also be City Living patio arrangements displayed on the Convention Center’s Skybridge centered right above Pike Place! For only $45 a person, all have an opportunity to join in one of the Blooms & Bubbles workshops that are held on a daily basis. Chihuly Garden and Glass –
The Chihuly Garden and Glass exhibition is a must-see for everyone visiting Seattle, no matter what the weather may bring. The exhibition is located next to the Space Needle, so visiting both of these iconic places is a breeze! The building contains eight Chihuly glass galleries, a beautiful 40-ft tall Glasshouse, an explosively gorgeous garden filled with glass art and flowers, and a theater depicting videos and presentations related to the art of glass blowing.

Frye Art Museum –
The Frye Art Museum is a free must-see item on the list. The Museum is well-known for its 19th and 20th century German and American paintings, spanning a collection of over 200 such paintings. One current exhibit is the Frye Salon , a collection of 22 paintings hung close together across a wall, also known as salon-style hanging. If the performing arts are more to your liking, then venues such as the Showbox , The Triple Door , Pacific Northwest Ballet , and The 5th Avenue feature wonderful performances on a daily basis! The Showbox and Triple Door generally feature a plethora of musical artists and provide a night of fun, food, and drink along with a show! The Pacific Northwest Ballet is a highly regarded ballet school that will soon be featuring such ballets as The Sleeping Beauty (February 1-10, 2019) and Pinocchio (March 17, 23, 2019).

The 5th Avenue Theatre provides an elegant setting for the art of musicals and Broadway. Fascinating Exhibits at the Seattle Art Museum in Seattle WA

Established in 1933, this beautiful art museum contains over 25,000 unique pieces of art from all over the world! Their collections encompass Northwest Coast Native, old masters, and contemporary art. Exhibits currently on display include:

Easter Brunch Egg Strata

We would like to share with all of you a favorite recipe from the Shafer Baillie Mansion

Brenda’s Egg Strata

Shafer Baillie Mansion

3-4 Cups shredded bread – You can use any type of breads. I like a combination of Dave’s Killer 21-grain bread along with croissants as they are very buttery and make for a wonderful texture and flavor.

8 Eggs, beaten

3 Cups milk

3 Cups grated cheese – I prefer a combination of white and yellow chesses, such as Flagship Cheddar and Swiss. A Mexican blend makes a nice option. You can also sprinkle cooked sausage on top with the cheese.

Spices – In addition to salt and pepper, I use a combination of fresh rosemary and other dried spices that I have on hand. Rosemary seems to be the favorite.

Spread bread pieces in layer 1-2” deep

Combine eggs, milk and spices and pour over the bread layer.

Top with grated cheese.

Cover and refrigerate overnight.

Bake uncovered 50-60 min at 350 ^o

The great city of Seattle is known for its many popular landmarks. The most popular landmarks are the Space Needle and Pike Place Market. However, did you know that Seattle is also known for its various restaurants and their cuisines? The best part is that they are less than one mile from Shafer Baillie Mansion. The following highlights some of the restaurants that are within walking distance of our bed and breakfast that are not only delicious, but also have a lively atmosphere that is fun for everyone from couples to entire families.

Poppy’s Seattle

Located in our backyard (Capitol Hill neighborhood), Poppy’s is one of the many places that we believe will not leave you hungry or disappointed. Its owner Jerry Traunfeld has been recognized for his use of various seasonings to complement traditional Northwest cooking. Some of his recognitions include being “ Seattle Met” Magazine’s Chef of 2015. Poppy’s has also been included as one of the top places to eat in the Seattle Metropolitan area. Besides having a recognized chef as its leader, the restaurant is also known for its delicious food. Some of the most popular dishes served at the restaurant are “Five-spices Braised Duck with Blackberry Sauce” and “Smoked Thai Pork Sausage”. Be sure to also save some room at this restaurant for their fabulous desserts which include “Deep-Dish Apple Pie” and “Chocolate Walnut Baklava” to name a couple.

Nuflours

Co-owners Phebe Rossi and Amanda Bedell founded the restaurant with the belief that all food should be sourced locally, but they also take other things into consideration such as being gluten free. If you, your spouse, or any of your family members have certain food allergies or care about your food being locally sourced, this is the place in Seattle to visit! Besides carrying gluten free options, the restaurant also carries other health-related options . In addition, this establishment has a fabulous dessert menu too! One of the great desserts offered is the “Millionaire Bar,” a short bread cookie topped with chocolate ganache. It doesn’t get much better than that folks!

Altura

The Italian word “Altura,” meaning “a great height” in English, is another restaurant that you do not want to overlook while you are visiting the great city of Seattle, Washington! Similar to Nuflours, Altura aims to serve locally sourced dishes as much as possible and can accommodate people with different kinds of food allergies. Some of the dishes on their menu include “Veal Breast and Wild Mushroom Mezzaluna” and “Grapefuit Sorbetto”. Besides serving up some delicious dishes, the restaurant also has a fantastic selection of wines and other alcoholic drinks . Some of the wines available are “Cesani Pancole Vernaccia di San Gimignano”(a white wine) and Putzenhof (a red wine). However, this restaurant is a bit on the pricey side with dinners equating to more than $100 per person.

The Wandering Goose

If you are looking for some “down home” Southern cooking, then The Wandering Goose is where you should go. The restaurant’s atmosphere is highlighted by owner Heather Earnhardt to not only remember the past, but to also look towards the future. She is also committed to making the food affordable for all her patrons. Be sure to stop at this place on Friday for their “Fried Chicken Dinner,” you can’t be its price! Besides fried chicken, the restaurant also serves other dishes. Some of its other dishes are “Aunt Annie’s,” a biscuit sandwich with fried chicken. pickles, mustard, and honey, and the Oyster Po’boy, a sandwich with fried oysters and other various condiments. In addition, the owner Heather is also a published author. Her books can be found on various sites such as Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

Rione XIII

If you are looking for rustic, Italian food near the Shafer Baillie Mansion, make sure to check out Rione XII ! Inspired by classic Roman flavors, the cuisine takes you back in time to the respective historical era. Be sure to take your family here on “Family Night”. The special night happens each second Tuesday of the month during which the restaurant serves kid friendly foods that your family is bound to enjoy. On the other hand, they also have more adult-friendly options to choose from including homemade mozzarella and Roman dish Cacio e Pepa or “cheese and pepper with pasta.” The dish is bound to leave you wanting to come back for more of this dish and many others that are bound to blow your mind.

Our innkeeper, Miss Brenda Mallonee, has been charming our guest with her southern personality for many years now. She is also an accomplished potter, her works grace the Mansion rooms and common spaces, before she became our innkeeper she gifted us with a bowl she made and that bowl has been welcoming guests to the Mansion as it sits on the entry way table filled with chocolates for everyone to enjoy!

Anna’s Hummingbird

Something amazing and wonderful occurred recently at the Shafer Baillie Mansion Bed & Breakfast!

Did you know that a hummingbird momma tells the daddy bird to fly away after the nest is built and eggs are laid? Yes, the female hummingbird is the only one who will care for these little eggs. A male hummingbird does not assist with any of the childcare. In fact, if a male hummingbird comes around, the female hummingbird will consider his brightly colored feathers a threat!

Ella’s babies have hatched are now growing and moving around the nest. Their little beaks can be seen peaking up above the rim of the nest!

Ella spends much of the day foraging for food, and then flying home to feed her babies. She feeds them nectar, tiny bugs and feeds them 2 or 3 times an hr. for their first 2 weeks of life. Now she is starting to be gone for long periods of time each day. In fact, I have not even seen for 3 days now!

Favorite restaurants in Capitol Hill

I’ve been asked to write a few blogs about my favorite places to eat in Seattle. I hope to write about Monsoon, Coastal Kitchen, Harry’s Bar, and several others.

Why go downtown to eat when the best restaurants in Seattle are just a few blocks walk from the Shafer Baillie Mansion; my home and my place of work. (Yes, I’m lucky, or as I would say, blessed!)

Since I spend most of my days in the kitchen for work, I must say having someone else do the cooking and clean up is a real incentive for eating out!

My most favorite place to dine these days has got to be Monsoon on 19 ^th Ave East. Just 5 blocks down Aloha to 19 ^th and to the right a block or two, sits the recently renovated and expanded Monsoon. In and outside seating, open windows and lovely understated décor makes Monsoon not only the best place to eat but a lovely relaxed atmosphere as well!

They have an excellent happy hour: 3:30pm to 5:30pm. Summer time allows us to sit among the trees on the roof top and sip handmade “adult” slushiness. The fruit ones are always delicious. Crunchy freshness abounds in the tasty appetizers.

Meat and seafood lovers seem to enjoy the selections offered daily for lunch and dinner and I being pleased mostly with vegetarian dishes, find plenty to choose from.

Their food is a combination of modern Vietnamese and Pacific Northwest flare. They offer a plethora of services. From lunch box delivery, group dinning, in and outdoor seating to an ocean bar and tasty craft cocktails.

Lunch and dinner, weekend Dim Sum and brunch will please the palate as well. The wait staff is knowledgeable and friendly…I must say, Monsoon is the best of the best places to eat in Seattle. I have sent folks from around the world to dine there and they never leave unsatisfied.

12 Fantastic things to do in downtown Seattle

The downtown area of Seattle encompasses Pioneer Square ( where old Seattle was born) and part of Chinatown-International District to the South just shy of the Century Link Field ( home of the Seahawks) and stretches north towards the Space Needle to Denny Way. The waterfront area as well as Pike Place Market are also part of it.

1) Most people will head to Pike Place Market to take in the longest running fresh food market in the country and get flower bouquets that are beautiful to behold and very reasonably priced. More on the Market on a later post.

2) Waterfront:

a) The Seattle Aquarium, a very popular place all times of the year. The Aquarium closes at 5pm but a little know fact is that you can stay there till 6pm when it’s very quiet and you get lots of attention from the docents.

b) Ye Olde Curiosity Shop, a favorite with locals and tourist alike. Where else can you find shrunken heads and 4 legged chickens and don’t forget about Sylvester ( the resident mummy).

c) The Seattle Great Wheel, it has been in Seattle for about 5years and it has become a favorite attraction.

d) Washington State Ferries- you can walk on and end up in Bainbridge Island for the day, visit the quaint downtown, have lunch , do a walk on the beach and see the Seattle skyline at sunset on your way back.

e) Argosy Cruises- a quick harbor tour or a longer tour through the Ballard locks into Lake Washington as well as a Blake Island experience awaits you.

Lion Hearted

For over 10,000 years, majesty, nobility and protection have emanated from lion statues, greeting visitors to homes and cities since the beginning of civilization. We like the idea of welcoming our guests and keeping them safe with the aid of ancient, mythological symbols. When we bought Shafer Baillie Mansion in 2004 we were delighted to inherit from the previous owners two beautiful, stone lions.

We took to these brave creatures so well that we decided to increase their numbers. First we purchased a new set of lions, the type that holds paws up. However, these were promptly stolen, much to our chagrin.

Not to be dissuaded, we determined to find more valiant lions, some that would not be so easily stolen, and that sat vertically to contrast with the original lions, so we found a set with a shield and brought them home to the mansion-however we continue to look for some that would have a more appropriate scale to the mansion.

After 8 years of faithfully greeting our guests the shielded loins have been moved to the terrace and a new impressive pair has taken their place. These new kids on the block are no Foo Dogs, but they have some Asian features and are not lying down… And they weighed two tons each!

Through uncanny coincidence, some guests recognized these particular guardians, sharing with our manager Brenda over breakfast that they had seen these lions before. Curiosity led us through research and a trail of emails until we learned that indeed our lions had previously adorned a beach house on Fox Island near where our guests had lived.

As the story goes, the lions we had come to call our own were purchased in Vietnam as a gift from a loving wife to her husband, the two young lions at the base represent their two sons.

It was quite an effort to bring the big cats home. Fortunately the folks we purchased the new lions from had a towing business. Their equipment came in handy for hoisting the majestic statues onto the back of a friend’s trailer for the ride to Shafer Baillie.

Once at the mansion, though, it was another story. It took many hours and three strong men to unload these marble kings of the jungle onto the sidewalk. Since the lion’s share of the day was gone, we had no choice but to leave them there overnight, tied to the fence. The next day we hired safe movers — people who move safes — to place them on either side of the stairs.

New Year! New Website! and MORE!

Our new responsive website will more easily adapt to the size of the screen you’re using, from a widescreen desktop to a mobile phone. Our friends at Acorn Internet Services, developers of our first website back in 2006, have also been our collaborators on the new site. Some design elements such as colors and fonts will be familiar, but with lots more and bigger photos, and our first-ever logo designed by Andrea Leksen of Leksen Design.

We are very excited about choosing photos for the new website to show off the interior of the Mansion, even though many of you still say pictures don’t do it justice!

We continue to care for our 101-year-old building. We’re very conscious of being custodians even more than owners. The latest improvements include a new high-efficiency heat pump for the third floor that keeps it cool in the summer and warm in the winter!

In late January we will close for the first time in 10 years to refinish the main level Siberian oak floors with a water-based finish, install new carpet on the front stairs and landing, and touch up some paint and tile. New quartz counters for the kitchen are also on tap.

When we bought the Mansion more than 11 years ago, we refinished some of the floors but ran out of steam when we got to the dining room and entrance hall. By doing all the floors at the same time, we will provide a continuity that is now lacking and will ensure that the floors are good to go for another century.

Broadway farmers’ market

I opened my eyes and before me were four large beautiful banners hanging from the tall ceiling. They read WELCOME … INSPIRE … SERVE … TRANSFORM . I started to really read those words over and over to myself. Focusing on what those words truly mean. My role and purpose in Seattle and particularly at the Shafer Baillie Mansion became very clear to me. This is exactly what I want to do at the Mansion. Glenn and I have discussed this job and the changes we are making in our personal lives to move here. So when I returned from the church, I told him what had become clear to me and he said it made good sense to him.

So what do we see ourselves doing here? We want to welcome each and every visitor into this splendid restored home, We want each guest to be inspired from their time at the Mansion and in Seattle. We want to serve our guests a scrumptious and healthy breakfast and then hopefully we all will be transformed into stronger and better people. My wish is for the guests to use this beautiful Mansion as a restorative and relaxing place. A time for reassessing and making plans for their futures, whatever they may be!

Meet Brenda!

Remember last time when I said the biggest news around the Mansion these days is our 3 new guest rooms on the third floor, opening in mid-May? So maybe I lied, a little. The really, truly, honestly biggest news is the latest addition to the Mansion team, our new fulltime innkeeper, Brenda Mallonee!

If you see more fresh-baked items appearing in our breakfast spread, thank Brenda’s passion for cooking. And if the Mansion grounds seem to be coming to life in a whole new way, that would be her gardening passion! From time to time you may see the table graced with the products of her pottery passion. This blog will likely highlight her photography passion. But most of all there is her people passion, which you will recognize immediately when she greets you at the door or on the telephone. We’re already hearing rave reviews from our guests and I know you’ll agree.

In addition to her primary responsibilities in day-to-day care for our guests, Brenda is also already having an impact in improving our wedding and event operations, and she is excited to be the point person for concerts and shows in our downstairs perfomance space, the Speakeasy. She brings many years of contacts in the music industry with her, so you may be surprised at some of the faces appearing in our humble little venue in the months ahead!

I could go on to tell you all about Brenda’s teammate, Glenn, who will join us in May just in time for the opening of our new rooms. But I’ll save that for closer to the date.

You may be wondering what is becoming of Ana Lena and Mark. Not to worry! We remain as intimately involved as ever with all facets of the Mansion operation on a daily basis. So when you come visit us you won’t be missing out on old friends, just making a new one!
